He was traveling at more than 170 MPH when the crankshaft fell out of his dragster, causing it to spin out of control. He won but his hand brake failed to stop the car. He went off the end of the race track, traveled another 1,700 feet, crossed two ditches, a county road, and crashed into a farmer’s fence. The bolts on his seat bolt broke loose upon impact and he was thrown 160 feet away from the car. He died instantly from head injuries of the impact.
